November on the farm means hay bales and turkeys!
Each fall we purchase round bales to supplement the square bales we have from our own fields. This is what we use to feed the cows for the winter. Our cows are completely grass fed and they stay on pasture all year. When the pasture dies and is completely eaten, we supplement with hay. These bales will be strategically placed throughout our pasture and the cows will be moved to a new group of bales every few days. This is the first load of many this week, which brings this girl anxiety. Trailering, tractoring, and placement of very heavy hay bales scares me, but it must be done or the cows won't eat this winter.
TurkeysOur turkeys are growing and growing! I'm thankful we have raised these turkeys from hatchlings. I'm glad we see the full circle of life here on our farm, and I'm thankful to be providing nourishing meat for our family and yours! It is a tragedy in our culture that people are so removed from the food they eat. I realize no one wants to see a picture of their turkey before they eat it, but knowing where your food comes from brings an appreciation not seen much today.
Moveable Turkey PenOur turkeys live in this moveable coop. They are moved to fresh pasture twice daily and are fed organic grain in the morning and mid-afternoon. James and Isaiah are in charge of the afternoon feeding. The turkeys get very excited to see them coming! There is lots of turkey chatter when we are near. They chatter all day and we enjoy hearing them. Raising meat the right way is no easy task, but very rewarding. We hope you have secured a pasture-raised turkey of your own!
